The delivery question

Which interaction pattern matches the task without introducing unnecessary modality or keyboard complexity?

A reliable answer has to connect user needs, implementation constraints, and observable acceptance checks. The following practice keeps those decisions visible from discovery through handoff.

Delivery method

From guidance to a testable implementation.

Each layer answers a different question: what the standards require, how the team will build it, and what evidence will show that it works.

01

Interpret the guidance

  • Use a disclosure for showing related inline content and reserve modal dialogs for tasks that genuinely interrupt the page.
  • Expose expanded state and controlled-region relationships on disclosure buttons.
  • Move focus into a modal, contain its tab sequence, support Escape, and return focus when it closes.
02

Build the practice

  • Document opening, closing, focus placement, background interaction, and destructive-action behavior for each pattern.
  • Use native elements where possible and add ARIA only when the behavioral contract is fully implemented.
  • Test pointer, keyboard, screen reader, route-change, and nested-content scenarios.
03

Validate the result

  • No user becomes trapped or loses their place after closing a layer.
  • State remains available to assistive technologies.
  • Mobile navigation and desktop navigation provide the same destinations and clear active state.
