Case study 03 / Media Delivery
Responsive visual assets without unnecessary download cost
A production workflow for art direction, image sizing, modern formats, and accessible alternatives across marketing pages and content-heavy products.
The delivery question
How should one visual idea adapt to multiple screens without shipping the largest file everywhere?
A reliable answer has to connect user needs, implementation constraints, and observable acceptance checks. The following practice keeps those decisions visible from discovery through handoff.
Delivery method
From guidance to a testable implementation.
Each layer answers a different question: what the standards require, how the team will build it, and what evidence will show that it works.
Interpret the guidance
- Separate art-direction decisions from resolution switching: a crop may change meaning while a size change should not.
- Supply intrinsic dimensions to reserve layout space and use meaningful alternative text only when an image communicates content.
- Treat compression and format selection as a content-publishing responsibility, not a final developer cleanup.
Build the practice
- Define source masters, crop rules, export widths, quality targets, and fallback formats in the asset brief.
- Use picture and source for art direction, with srcset and sizes for density and viewport selection.
- Measure representative pages over constrained networks and watch image contribution to loading and layout stability.
Validate the result
- The browser selects an appropriately sized candidate at each target viewport.
- Images reserve space before download and do not cause avoidable layout movement.
- Decorative and informative visuals have correct alternative-text behavior.
