Secure authentication and session lifecycle by design
An implementation checklist for identity, password handling, session creation, cookie protection, reauthentication, logout, and sensitive-operation controls.
The delivery question
How should an application prove identity and maintain state without turning the session into its weakest control?
A reliable answer has to connect user needs, implementation constraints, and observable acceptance checks. The following practice keeps those decisions visible from discovery through handoff.
Delivery method
From guidance to a testable implementation.
Each layer answers a different question: what the standards require, how the team will build it, and what evidence will show that it works.
Interpret the guidance
- Use established framework and identity-provider capabilities instead of inventing authentication protocols.
- Treat a session identifier as a credential: keep it unpredictable, meaningless to clients, protected in transit, and absent from URLs and logs.
- Require stronger verification for sensitive actions and provide clear expiration and logout behavior.
Build the practice
- Threat-model registration, sign-in, recovery, session renewal, privilege changes, and termination as one lifecycle.
- Configure secure, HTTP-only, appropriately scoped cookies and rotate identifiers after authentication changes.
- Hash passwords with an approved adaptive algorithm and keep secrets out of source code and client storage.
Validate the result
- Authentication and authorization receive separate automated and manual tests.
- Logout and expiry invalidate server-side state and clear sensitive browser data as designed.
- Logs support investigation without exposing credentials or raw session identifiers.
